Instructor Course requirements and Steps

Instructor courses are open to healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and others with a current provider card who have experience teaching or training others.

  • A current, unexpired AHA provider card in the discipline of your choice (i.e., an ACLS, a BLS, or a PALS provider card).
  • A solid understanding of the course content for the course you want to teach. (For example, knowing the textbook is important for all entry-level instructors.)
  • A copy of your chosen discipline’s provider textbook (i.e., ACLS Textbook, BLS Textbook, or PALS Textbook)
  • A Training Center/Site that is willing to accept and collaborate with you as an instructor.
  • A positive and friendly personality, as well as a willingness to teach.

To become an American Heart Association (AHA) instructor, the following steps are typically required:

  1. Meet the qualifications: To become an AHA instructor, you must be a healthcare provider with a current professional certification or licensure in your field, and have a current AHA provider card in the discipline for which you wish to teach.

  2. Complete and upload all the necessary forms requested in the course

  3. Complete an Instructor Essentials course: Before you can become an AHA instructor, you must complete an Instructor Essentials course, which is offered by the AHA and covers the skills and knowledge needed to teach AHA courses.

  4. Attend a discipline-specific instructor course: Once you have completed the Instructor Essentials course, you must attend a discipline-specific instructor course, such as BLS (Basic Life Support) or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) instructor course. These courses are designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to teach the specific discipline.

  5. Pass a written and practical exam: After completing the discipline-specific instructor course, you must pass a written and practical exam to demonstrate your knowledge and skills.

  6. You have a choice to align with our training Centre or find your own.

  7. Maintain your certification: Once you have become an AHA instructor, you must maintain your certification by renewing your provider card and completing continuing education requirements every two years.
